Original 1820 hand-colored aquatint plate. Aquatint is a printmaking technique that produces a full tonal range and rich texture . This is not a photo mechanical process – the plates are individually hand drawn. Starting with a copper plate, the artist applies rosin dust. The rosin dust is dropped and melted onto the plate creating a matrix of small dots. This was from a German Travel Book,  Baron J.J. von A Picturesque Tour Along The Rhine From Mentz to Cologne, that was printed in London by R. Ackermann, an 1820 first edition book. Beautifully and professionally framed with wood, black glass, and gold foil it measures 19 inches by 12 inches with the plate size of 11 1/2 by 9 1/2. In very good vintage condition.
