antique porcelain tube insulators used in knob and tube wiring.
These insulators are components of a historical electrical wiring method known as knob and tube wiring, these are from a home I'm Loveland that was built in 1895
Function:
The tubes, like those pictured, were used to insulate and protect electrical wires as they passed through wooden framing members (joists, studs, etc.) in a building. This prevented the wires from coming into contact with flammable materials and provided insulation.
Material:
They are typically made of porcelain or ceramic, chosen for their excellent insulating properties.
