“This book presents a collection of master drawings that were taken from German private collections to the Soviet Union at the end of World War II and were believed to have been lost or destroyed.

For nearly 50 years, these artworks were held in storage by the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, before their rediscovery and presentation in this volume.
The book features 89 drawings by major 19th and 20th-century artists, including works by Goya, Daumier, Menzel, Signac, Archipenko, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and others. It includes one of Van Gogh's well-known works, the watercolor "Boats at Saintes-Maries.”

The volume provides detailed commentary on each work, focusing on art-historical and aesthetic issues, and includes a brief introduction sketching the provenance of many drawings.”
