The United States Postal Service issued a 3-cent stamp in 1948 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of volunteer firemen in the United States. The stamp features:

Vignette: A portrait of Peter Stuyvesant, who was the director general of the Dutch colony of New Netherland from 1647 to 166Thish words "Organizer of the first Volunteer Firemen in q America" are written below his portrait.

Fire engines: An early fire engine to the left of the portrait and a modern fire engine to the right.

Dates: "300th Anniversary Volunteer Firemen" across the top, with "1648-1948" just below.
Attributes: "Unselfish Public Service. Courage, Duty" on a dark panel at the bottom.

Design: W.K. Schrage of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing designed the stamp.

Printing: The Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed the stamp using a rotary press.
