NGC AU double-denarius of Tetricus II, son of Tetricus I, Emperor of the Gallic Empire.
While coins of Tetricus II are not uncommon, they are extremely rare in this condition. With a strong strike, bold portrait, and clear legend, this is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen.
Obv: C PIV ESV TETRICVS CAES, Bust of Tetricus II, radiate, draped, right
Rev: SPES AVGG, Spes, draped, walking left, holding flower in right hand and raising robe with left hand
Tetricus II was the son of Tetricus I, Emperor of the Gallic Empire, a brake away portion of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. Tetricus II was promoted to Caesar (junior emperor) in 273 until he and his father were deposed by Emperor Aurelian in 274.
This coin is a double-denarius, more commonly called an Antoninianus (named after Emperor Caracalla under whose reign the denomination was introduced). It is considered a debased silver denomination.
